How the Mayans foretold business in 2013

mayan_calenderThere was much hullabaloo over the Mayan prophecies and the end of the world. On December the 21st 2012, the world held its breath and waited for the planet Nibiru to crash into ours, people to be carried away on an alien spaceship buried under a mountain, or for us all to be suddenly sucked into a black hole.

Needless to say, none of the above happened and everyone breathed a huge sigh of relief. The point that the Maya calendar never suggested any such thing and really it was saying that earth was entering a different cycle seemed lost on most news channels.

Just for clarity the date was the end of a 5,126 year long Mesoamerican Long Count calendar and was a date that showed a new age, and a dawn where humans would undergo a positive physical or spiritual transformation. So how the hell does that impact current business?

In my mind, I am already seeing the effects during conversations where a new age of balanced business is upon us. There seems to be as much importance being shown to culture and positive global impact than there used to be.

Business owners are seeing that an empowered and healthy workforce is vital to growth and sustainability. They are looking at society and seeing that they can build integral links with the community that provide benefit for both sides.  I am seeing more and more people look at what they can give back and how their lives mean so much more than a Bentley parked on a driveway.

I have spoken to many business owners who are not happy working with bad clients or people that disrespect them during meetings as they expect so much more. Is this because we have entered a new phase of business across the planet? I think so, you may disagree. What I don’t think you can disagree with is that times are a changing and the ‘fluffy’ stuff is now becoming much more important, relevant and proven to be incredibly important to business. London has just seen the launch of Metro bank whose sole differentiator is to build fans not customers.

They do this by speaking about dogs and children and just doing the simple stuff right. They have people who welcome you into the bank and look happy working there. Apple, Google, John Lewis and Innocent (smoothies) to name a few, are companies who have culture embedded into the bedrock of their organisations. They are leading the forward, proving that having a positive culture is paramount to success. Is this because of an ancient Mayan calendar? I don’t know. But the timings seem incredibly coincidental.
